Clocks

Building instructions of 52 pages with pictures and drawings and a cd of pictures and drawings at full resolution describe the construction of a clock which is in skeleton form to show the inner workings. The clock is powered by three Meccano Magic motors giving a running duration of 30 hours on a single winding. The clock strikes the hour and includes dial adjustment of pendulum length without stopping the clock, a strike/silent switch, and a seconds dial, the hand moving in discrete half-second steps.

The designer of this model suggests that it requires a lot of patience to build an must not be rushed! The model requires a precision electric motor not in the Meccano range. Developed by John Harrison the original clock took ninteen years to develop. Although Harrison could not get the accuracy he wanted it did incorporate two inventions which are still used today: the bimetallic strip and the caged roller bearing.

A new design of this unique clock featured first in MP104. While keeping to the original priciple this clock has a rebuit escapement requiring much less power allowing it to run for months unattended. It also has a simplified pendulum and case. The need for even greater accuracy led to the development of greatly improved escapements, such as the Riefler Escapement. This clock uses the energy from the bending of the suspension spring to keep the pendulum swinging.
