Although not a model building plan for a specific model this publication explains the history anddevelopment of the stationary steam engine from its invention in the early1700's to around 1800, through the efforts and genius of the fathers of theSteam Age - Newcomen,Smeaton, Watt, Boulton, Wilkinson, Murdoch, Trevithick and Murray - and therealisation of the designs, mechanisms and prototypes in Meccano.

From this the Meccano model builder can learn the development of the various types of steam engine and can see examples of their construction in Meccano.

These instructions describe the building of a model based upon a variety of prototypes, chiefly an engine preserved at Kew Bridge Engine Station, London. The original was designed to lift water from a well.
